This has been a long journey but after much deliberation, conversation, and inner struggles. My dear personal series is best suited to the grounded and flexible world of independent publishing. Each indie project is unique with different narrative flows and needs. A series like El Peso Hero, in which its main pulse is derived from reflections of the community, needs flexibility and most of all sincerity. Stories within El Peso Hero: Border Stories were created and published in a few months to reflect the current struggles and needs. I’m not able to do that in the mainstream publishing world. I will sacrifice mass accessibility through a direct-to-market model but the story won’t feel genuine and timely.
Earlier I had a post on the pros and cons of independent publishing which was erroneous in citations and was basically regurgitated from an amazing advocate and author. I took the post down immediately, thanks to a good friend who notify me and did some extensive research on the amazing author. I highly recommend Gamal Hennessy’s “The Business of Independent Comic Book Publishing”. I really wish I had this book 13 years ago. It explains in a formal the legal, business, and creative planning of indie publishing. For anyone inspired to enter the business or who needs a great resource, I highly recommend it.
