Growing up in the eXtreme ’90s there was a voice that profoundly shook the comic book industry. On a personal level, I did enjoy mainstream books but it was all surface level. I couldn’t connect with Bruce Wayne or Peter Parker. It wasn’t until I came across the story of Al Simmons, the African American vigilante hero known as SPAWN. Created by Todd McFarlane, I was drawn by the grit and seriousness of the narrative. For me, it felt like I was reading Robocop. Todd McFarlane became one of the leading independent comic book publishers. I was inspired by his own unique often dark pencils and supernatural stories. He co-founded Image Comics providing a platform for independent creators to tell their stories and express their creativity without the constraints of traditional comic book publishers. Something that I have immense respect for as an independent creator.
I’m sharing some personal highlights, my issue 1 of Spawn as well as a drawing I did during my Junior year in High School. A time when I was consuming a steady flow of comics.
